Documentary
Documentary as a genre is less glamorous than drama, but in South Africa (and probably around the world) it offers many young and aspiring filmmakers the opportunity to hone their skills and understand the technicalities of filmmaking. Documentary filmmaking, however, is not a mere stepping stone on the road to drama, it is a goal in itself.
One of the charms of documentary films is that they offer you the feeling of being connected to someone somewhere in the world as you learn about the characters and their worlds in the film. Documentaries also allow you to travel in time and in space to see what the world looked like in different times and to see what it looks like today in different places. If you’re lucky, a documentary film may even change your point of view.
Working alongside freelance and other independent filmmakers the members of Free Range Films have worked as directors, researchers, producers and editors on various documentaries. The documentaries listed on this web site are the ones we have produced or co-produced under the banner of Free Range Films.
